Mastering Adjectives & Adverbs
Warm up:
What’s the difference between adverbs and adjectives?
Which word describes the person? Which describes the action?
Analyse the sentences below and tell me the difference.
She is a quick runner. She runs quickly.
Definition of Adjective: An adjective is a word that describes a
noun (a person, place, or thing).
👉 It gives more information about:
size (big, small)
feeling (happy, sad)
quality (good, beautiful,ugly)
Examples:
She is a kind person.
It is a big office.
They have a busy job.
It is a beautiful city
Definition of Adverb:
An adverb is a word that describes a verb (an action).
In adverbs we add ly at the end of adjectives.
For example: slow - slow+ly = slowly
👉 It tells us:
how (quickly, carefully)
when (now, later)
where (here, everywhere)
Examples:
She works quickly.
He speaks clearly.
They arrived late.
She walks slowly.
⚠️ However, there are some exceptions:
1. Not all adverbs end in -ly
fast → fast
hard → hard
late → late
good-well
👉 Example:
He runs fast (NOT fastly)
👉Check your understanding
Choose the correct word:
He is a (slow / slowly) driver
She speaks English (perfect / perfectly)
They work (hard / hardly)
This test is (easy / easily)
They have to be (confident/confidently)
